Not Just Duluth….
There is amazing mtb action to be had in several neighboring areas in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan! The furthest from the Twin Ports well known area is Copper Harbor, Michigan. A true outdoors town! Copper has some phenomenal trails…not to mention amazing water access and great road riding as well. It’s waaaaay out there – smack-dab in the middle of Lake Superior on the Keweenaw Peninsula – but well worth it (Check this video) ! As long as you’re in the area – check out the Marquette trails too. Wanna see what the entire U.P. has to offer for MTB? Here it is. You’ll discover that they do things differently there.
psst! -do you like great back country style, deep powder, no grooming but lift-served skiing? You’re gonna love Mount Bohemia! This place is for real!!
Getting closer to Duluth – you can ride the expansive CAMBA trails of the Cable – Hayward area in Wisconsin. Home to the continent’s largest mass start MTB race – the Chequamagon Fat Tire 40 – this entire area is blessed with great road, gravel, ski trail and singletrack riding. It truely is a small town riding Mecca!
Even here in Minnesota there are several other areas where you can find great riding. About 2 hours to our west lies the Cuyuna Lakes trail system. Built along the Cuyuna Iron Range these trails are super duper flowy and fast. This is part of the Brainerd Lakes area – you will have no trouble finding things to do here!
To our North, along Lake Superior’s north coast, reside two more fun trail systems. Both Tofte and Grand Marais have continually expanding trail systems due to the efforts of the Superior Cycling Association. There is also some new trail on the Mesabi Iron Range thanks largely to the folks at IROC ( Iron Range Offroad Cyclists). Trails in Hibbing, Grand Rapids, and Virginia have been drawing rave reviews! Across the state to our west lies Detroit Lakes – home to Maplelag and Detroit Mountain – one of only two areas in the state with lift-served mountain biking. The other being Spirit Mountain right here in Duluth.
There are others too. Minneapolis is over flowing with bike culture and trails just waiting for your tires (MORC). The Eau Claire, Wisconsin area also has some good stuff (CORBA)….Winona, MN. as well (WAMB). Don’t worry – when you come to this tri-state area – you WILL find plenty of riding!!
